Welcome to Colorado Trusts & Estates!

Johnson Law Corporation is a Denver (Centennial-Littleton) Colorado based law firm. Founded in 1994 by Maurice Johnson, it specializes in family and divorce law, business, estate planning and trusts, probate and trust administration, tax planning, pensions, real estate, civil litigation, appeals, and related bankruptcy.

For many clients, trust planning is appropriate to avoid court proceedings and provide asset protection. Limited liability business entities should also be used whenever they are appropriate.

Colorado Estate Planning and Administration; Probate
Estate planning in Colorado should address family needs and personal development both during lifetime and after death. Most families are best served by the avoidance of court-supervised probate, guardians hips, and conservators hips. The applicable tools include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, living wills, and tax/business planning. Pre-nuptial and Post-Nuptial Agreements are now often a part of estate planning.

In many cases, we establish separate business entities to isolate business liability. Our work includes planning, formation, buy-sell agreements among owners, and the sale of business assets or the entire business entity.

Estate planning checklists and questionnaires for a single person and a married couple can be downloaded here.

A no charge initial consultation is provided if a questionnaire is completed and brought with you.

Estate administration (with or without probate) should be done for even small estates, to make sure that the step-up in income tax basis is obtained for all heirs. Many heirs pay income tax on inherited assets only because they do not understand our tax laws.

For most estates, with proper planning, estate tax is no longer an issue. In 2006, a single individual can transfer up to $2,000,000 free from estate tax and a married couple can transfer up to $4,000,000.

Estate administration checklists and questionnaires for a single individual and an individual with a surviving spouse can be downloaded here.

New law as of July 1, 2006, provides greater protection to Colorado estate creditors. Particularly where a revocable trust is used.
